Description

Superman #82 is one of the most important chapters from the massive Death and Return of Superman saga. Released in 1993, this issue delivers the climax of Reign of the Supermen. It finally puts the genuine Superman back where he belongs.

Dan Jurgens wrote and penciled the story. Brett Breeding provided the finished art, with Glenn Whitmore supplying the colors. Their work helped define Superman comics during one of the biggest publishing events of the 1990s.

The story is titled “Back for Good!” and takes place during the final battle at Engine City. Superman faces Cyborg Superman, who is revealed as Hank Henshaw. The confrontation brings together several major characters from the entire storyline.

Steel, Superboy, Supergirl, Eradicator, and Green Lantern Hal Jordan all become part of the fight. Mongul also remains a major threat. The enormous cast gives the issue the feeling of a true event finale.

One of the most important moments involves the Eradicator. He explains his role in preserving Superman after the battle with Doomsday. That revelation helps complete one of the central mysteries surrounding Superman’s return.

Cyborg Superman eventually exposes Superman to the kryptonite power source inside Engine City. The Eradicator places himself between Superman and the deadly blast. His sacrifice changes the energy and helps restore Superman’s depleted powers.

The returned Superman can finally fight at full strength again. He confronts Cyborg Superman and destroys his mechanical body. The victory brings the main conflict of Reign of the Supermen to its dramatic conclusion.

Another memorable moment follows the battle. Supergirl recreates Superman’s familiar red and blue costume. The sight of the classic uniform confirms what readers had been waiting to see. Superman is truly back.

The copy shown is the special Collector’s Edition. Its original cover price is $3.50 rather than the standard edition’s $2.00 price. The striking premium cover treatment gives Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding’s artwork additional visual impact.

This issue carries tremendous 1990s nostalgia. The Death and Return of Superman saga became one of the defining comic events of the decade. Superman #82 provides the payoff to that enormous storyline.

Collectors get Superman, Steel, Superboy, Supergirl, Eradicator, Green Lantern, Cyborg Superman, and Mongul in one issue. More importantly, they get the moment when Superman finally reclaims his identity and classic appearance.

For collectors building the complete Death and Return saga, Superman #82 is an essential chapter. It represents the conclusion readers had followed through numerous titles and months of storytelling.
