Description
The Mighty Thor #700 is a major milestone from Jason Aaron’s celebrated Thor saga. Released in 2017, this oversized issue begins “The Death of the Mighty Thor.” It also restores the title to legacy numbering after The Mighty Thor #23.
Jane Foster remains at the heart of the story. Her battle with cancer continues while her life as Thor becomes increasingly dangerous. Jane also clashes with Jennifer Walters, creating a memorable confrontation between Thor and Hulk.
Elsewhere, Thor Odinson faces another crisis involving the Norns. Malekith and his allies want to destroy the beings who weave fate itself. Odinson joins the defense of Nornkeep as the attack grows more desperate.
Karnilla plays an important role during this conflict. The assault ends tragically, and Karnilla dies while warning Thor about the terrible events still to come. Her death adds weight to a story already filled with signs of approaching disaster.
Volstagg also returns to his powerful War Thor identity. Armed with the hammer once carried by the Ultimate Thor, he seeks vengeance against Malekith’s forces. His path soon leads directly toward Mangog.
That encounter gives the issue one of its biggest threats. Mangog has returned, and even War Thor may not possess enough power to stop him. The confrontation sets up a major battle that continues beyond this chapter.
Jason Aaron uses the anniversary format to explore several eras of Thor history. Readers see Jane Foster, Odinson, War Thor, Throg, a younger Thor, and a future King Thor. These scenes make the issue feel like both a celebration and a warning about what lies ahead.
The enormous art lineup adds even more collector appeal. Russell Dauterman contributes interior pages alongside Walter Simonson, Daniel Acuña, James Harren, Becky Cloonan, Olivier Coipel, Chris Burnham, Andrew MacLean, Jill Thompson, Mike Del Mundo, and Das Pastoras. Each artist helps represent a different corner of Thor’s world.
The pictured copy features the regular Russell Dauterman cover with Matthew Wilson colors. The composition brings together several versions of Thor in one energetic image. It serves as an excellent visual celebration of the character’s long history.
Issue #700 also carries special importance within the Marvel Legacy era. The numbering change acknowledges the larger publishing history behind Thor while continuing Jane Foster’s story without interruption.
For Jane Foster fans, Jason Aaron collectors, and Thor readers, this issue offers plenty of significance. It begins an important final chapter for Jane’s time as the Mighty Thor. It also sets Mangog, Malekith, and several long running story threads on a collision course.
