Description

The Uncanny X-Men #214 is a memorable issue from Chris Claremont’s celebrated run. It gives Dazzler a major turning point in her history. By the end of this story, Alison Blaire officially accepts membership in the X Men.

The story is titled “With Malice Toward All!” and begins during a Lila Cheney concert in Denver. Dazzler is performing with Lila’s band while trying to keep a low profile. That becomes difficult because the dangerous Malice is influencing her mind.

Malice pushes Alison to take the spotlight for herself. Dazzler begins singing and uses her mutant light powers during the performance. The crowd loves what they see, but Lila immediately realizes Alison has taken a serious risk.

Back at Xavier’s school, Storm, Rogue, and Psylocke are dealing with the damaged Cerebro system. Wolverine is also present when Lila contacts the team about Dazzler’s troubling behavior.

Storm, Wolverine, Rogue, and Psylocke eventually track Dazzler to a nightclub in Dallas. They quickly discover that something is very wrong. Dazzler attacks the team while under Malice’s control.

The confrontation becomes especially dangerous because Malice can move between different hosts. She abandons Dazzler and takes control of Wolverine. Malice later possesses Rogue and uses her tremendous power against the police outside.

Psylocke eventually understands what is happening. The X Men create a plan to force Malice into a host they can better defend. Storm volunteers to become the target.

That decision produces one of the issue’s strongest moments. Storm refuses to surrender her identity to Malice. Her understanding of her own darker emotions gives her the strength to resist the possession.

The victory does not completely remove the danger. Malice secretly survives by possessing another person nearby. She also succeeds in creating distrust among members of the team.

Dazzler is left shaken by everything that happened. Storm explains that her connection to the X Men makes her a likely target for future attacks. She then offers Alison a place on the team.

Dazzler accepts.

That moment gives The Uncanny X-Men #214 lasting collector significance. Dazzler had already shared adventures with the team before this issue. Here, she finally becomes an official member of the X Men roster.

Chris Claremont writes the story, with Barry Windsor Smith providing the interior pencils. Bob Wiacek supplies the inks, Glynis Oliver handles colors, and Tom Orzechowski provides the lettering.

The cover also deserves special attention. Arthur Adams provides the pencils, while Barry Windsor Smith supplies the inks. Storm is shown overpowering a Malice possessed Dazzler in a dramatic burst of energy.

The bright blue background and oversized classic logo give the cover immediate visual appeal. The twenty fifth anniversary trade dress also places the issue firmly within its mid 1980s comic era.

This direct edition reached stores in October 1986 with a February 1987 cover date. It sits just after the devastating Mutant Massacre storyline. Malice had already appeared before this issue, so this is not her first appearance.

For collectors, the real attraction is Dazzler joining the X Men. That roster change gives issue #214 a clear place within Claremont era continuity. Barry Windsor Smith interior artwork and the Arthur Adams cover add even more appeal.

It is an affordable issue with genuine character significance. Dazzler collectors, X Men readers, and fans of classic 1980s artwork all have reasons to appreciate this chapter.
