Description

Shazam! #1 E launches a bright new era for Billy Batson during the Dawn of DC period. This edition features the Evan “Doc” Shaner 1:25 retailer incentive cover. Its limited distribution gives collectors an appealing alternative to the standard first issue.

Released in 2023, the series reunites writer Mark Waid with artist Dan Mora. Alejandro Sánchez provides the colors, while Troy Peteri handles the lettering. Their opening chapter embraces the adventure, humor, magic, and imagination that have long defined Billy Batson.

The story begins with Billy dealing with a very unusual problem. A young alien dinosaur has wandered away from its family. Billy uses his incredible powers to rescue the creature and eventually returns it to its parents.

It is exactly the kind of strange adventure that fits Shazam. Billy can face enormous threats, yet his stories still retain a youthful sense of wonder.

This series also gives Billy a new heroic nickname. Rather than simply calling himself Shazam, he begins using “The Captain.” The name provides a playful connection to the character’s long comic history while giving the modern version his own identity.

Billy has also turned the Rock of Eternity into something resembling a personal clubhouse. It reflects the fact that beneath all the magical power, he is still a young person enjoying an extraordinary life.

Freddy Freeman remains part of Billy’s world, although his own powers have become an unresolved issue. Billy wants to help his friend regain what he lost. That concern gives the story a personal thread beneath the larger magical adventures.

Tawky Tawny also appears, adding another familiar face from Shazam history. Waid clearly draws inspiration from the character’s classic sense of fun while keeping the setting connected to modern continuity.

Trouble begins building behind the scenes. Powerful magical figures are unhappy with how Billy is using his abilities. They believe the reputation of the gods connected to his power must be restored.

Their concern becomes much more disturbing near the end of the issue. Billy responds to an emergency and saves people from danger. Suddenly, his personality changes.

Instead of behaving like the kind and enthusiastic hero readers know, Billy becomes arrogant and demanding. The moment passes, but the people around him are understandably shocked.

That strange transformation sets up one of the central mysteries of the series. Something is affecting Billy, and even he does not fully understand what is happening.

Mark Waid uses this opening issue to celebrate the imaginative side of Shazam while introducing a serious problem beneath the surface. Dan Mora’s energetic artwork is an ideal match for that approach. His version of Billy feels powerful without losing the character’s youthful personality.

The Evan Doc Shaner cover gives this edition an additional collector angle. It was distributed as a 1:25 retailer incentive and is designated as Cover E. Shaner presents Billy soaring directly toward the reader in a clean, heroic composition.

Shazam! #1 E is not primarily collected as a major first appearance. Its appeal comes from launching the 2023 series, the Mark Waid and Dan Mora creative team, and the limited Shaner incentive cover.

For Shazam collectors, Dawn of DC fans, and modern incentive variant hunters, this is an attractive first issue with both story and display appeal.
