Description

Spawn #12 is an important early issue from Todd McFarlane’s original run and expands the mystery surrounding Al Simmons’ death. Released in 1993, the issue begins “Flashback Part 1” and reveals more about the conspiracy that turned Al into Spawn.

Todd McFarlane writes, pencils, inks, and provides the cover artwork. His heavy shadows and dramatic page layouts give the issue the unmistakable visual style of early Spawn.

The story finds Spawn drawn toward a church without fully understanding why. Being near the building causes memories from his former life to return. Al remembers marrying Wanda Blake and recalls the people who were there during happier times.

Those memories also bring Terry Fitzgerald back into his thoughts. Terry was once Al’s closest friend. After Al’s death, Terry eventually married Wanda and helped raise her daughter Cyan.

Spawn still struggles with that reality. He loves Wanda, yet he knows she has built a new life without him. That emotional conflict remains one of the strongest elements of these early stories.

Al soon visits Wanda’s grandmother, Granny Blake. She is blind and cannot see the horrifying appearance of the man standing before her. Instead, she senses something familiar about him and believes she is speaking with an angel.

This issue marks the first appearance of Granny Blake. She would become an important emotional connection to Al’s former life.

Spawn #12 is also notable for the first full appearance of Jason Wynn. Wynn was Al Simmons’ superior during his life as a government operative. His involvement begins exposing the larger conspiracy surrounding Al’s murder.

Wynn becomes suspicious of Terry Fitzgerald after stolen weapons and sensitive information begin pointing in Terry’s direction. The evidence actually connects back to Spawn’s actions, but Terry becomes the convenient target.

Wynn responds by sending men to frighten Terry and his family. His willingness to threaten innocent people immediately establishes the type of man he is.

The issue also contains an important revelation about Al’s death. Spawn finally connects his strange attraction to churches with the name Chapel. That realization leads him to understand that Chapel was the man responsible for killing him.

This discovery becomes a major step in Spawn’s search for answers. Al now has a name attached to one of the darkest moments of his former life.

The issue also delivers one of the stranger examples of Spawn’s living costume. Gareb tries putting on Spawn’s mask while the homeless group is celebrating. The mask suddenly attacks him and nearly strangles him.

Spawn must intervene and remove it. The scene reinforces that his costume is far more than ordinary clothing. It has instincts and abilities that Al still does not completely understand.

Collectors also get a memorable Todd McFarlane cover. The design places Spawn’s face against a nearly black background with a shattered eye effect. The simplicity makes it one of the more striking covers from the early run.

Spawn #12 has legitimate collector significance because of Jason Wynn and Granny Blake. It also reveals Chapel’s role in Al Simmons’ murder and continues building Spawn’s complicated origin.

For Spawn collectors, Todd McFarlane fans, and readers assembling the original series, this issue offers several important pieces of early continuity. It captures the mystery, horror, and personal tragedy that helped make the first years of Spawn so memorable.
