Description
Batman / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #2 delivers one of the biggest attractions of this crossover right away. Batman finally tests his skills against Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo in a full confrontation. Neither side knows enough about the other to trust what they see. That uncertainty creates a battle built around skill, speed, and strategy rather than simple brute force.
Batman studies the Turtles while fighting them and quickly begins reading their techniques. Leonardo proves especially capable of keeping pace with the Dark Knight. Michelangelo brings some humor to the clash, which keeps the personalities of the brothers intact. Splinter eventually intervenes and helps his family escape before the encounter can go any further.
The Turtles then take refuge inside an arcade as they try to understand Gotham and their strange situation. They know they are far from the New York they recognize. Their search for answers becomes increasingly important as the realities of dimensional travel begin shaping the larger story.
Batman is searching for answers as well. Bruce Wayne works with Lucius Fox to investigate the mysterious visitors and determine where they came from. This gives the issue a classic Batman detective element alongside the martial arts action.
Meanwhile, Shredder is already finding ways to operate inside Gotham’s criminal world. His meeting with the Penguin shows that the villains are not going to wait for Batman and the Turtles to understand each other. Shredder begins building connections that will create much larger problems as the series continues.
James Tynion IV writes the story with a strong understanding of both worlds. The Turtles still feel like brothers with very different personalities, while Batman remains cautious and analytical. Freddie Williams II provides the interior art and the striking main cover. His large, powerful Batman contrasts nicely with the faster movements and individual fighting styles of the four Turtles. Jeremy Colwell’s colors also help give Gotham and the Turtles distinct visual identities.
Released during the original 2016 crossover, this second issue is an appealing piece for collectors who enjoy both characters and unusual comic partnerships. It captures the early tension before Batman and the Turtles become allies. More importantly, it delivers the confrontation readers wanted when the crossover was first announced.
For collectors, this main cover is also a memorable Freddie Williams II image. Batman dominates the composition while all four Turtles charge into action around him. It makes the issue instantly recognizable as part of the original Batman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles event.
