Description

X-Force #7 delivers one of the most memorable cliffhangers from the early years of the series. Released in February 1992, the issue continues X-Force’s violent confrontation with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

Rob Liefeld provides the plot and artwork, while Fabian Nicieza handles the script and shares plotting credit. Steve Buccellato supplies the colors. The combination gives the issue the bold visual energy that defined X-Force during this period.

The main story, “Under the Knife,” throws the team directly into battle. Siryn, Warpath, and Shatterstar face Toad, Blob, Pyro, and Sauron outside the X-Force headquarters. Meanwhile, Masque, Thornn, and Phantazia manage to enter the team’s hidden base.

Inside, the fighting becomes personal. Feral comes face to face with Thornn, her own sister. Their confrontation adds another layer to the larger Brotherhood attack. Phantazia also creates serious trouble for Cannonball when her abilities interfere with his powers.

That interference becomes extremely important later in the story.

As Sauron approaches the base, Cannonball charges toward him. Cannonball normally relies on his protective blast field while flying. This time, his powers fail at the worst possible moment. Sauron strikes and brutally impales him.

Boom Boom rushes toward Cannonball and discovers that he is not moving. The issue ends with the team believing that Sam Guthrie has been killed. It is a dramatic cliffhanger that makes this chapter especially memorable within the early X-Force run.

The issue also contains “X Tenuating Circumstances,” a Weapon X backup story. Garrison Kane is sent on a mission in Canada and encounters members of the Mutant Liberation Front. Forearm, Sumo, and Wildside confront Kane, setting up a storyline that continues in a later issue.

For collectors, X-Force #7 captures the aggressive style and storytelling that made the series a major part of the early 1990s comic scene. Cable, Cannonball, Boom Boom, Feral, Siryn, Warpath, and Shatterstar are surrounded by threats on several fronts.

Rob Liefeld’s cover is another strong attraction. Cable towers over Cannonball and Boom Boom with weapons drawn, while the bright colors immediately evoke the era. The “Casualty of War!” burst also hints at the shocking events waiting inside.

Collectors building a complete original X-Force run will find plenty to appreciate here. The issue combines a major Cannonball cliffhanger, Brotherhood action, Weapon X material, and classic Liefeld artwork in one memorable package.
