Description

The World of Smallville #1 opens a revealing four issue miniseries that explores the family history behind Superman’s hometown. Released in 1988, this first chapter turns the spotlight toward Jonathan and Martha Kent. It shows that their lives carried important secrets long before Clark Kent entered the picture.

The story begins with Clark learning something he never expected about his mother. Martha had been married before she became Martha Kent. Her first husband was Daniel Fordman, a wealthy and important figure in Smallville. That revelation gives this issue an unusually personal focus for a Superman related story.

Much of the issue unfolds through memories of Jonathan and Martha’s younger years. Jonathan returns to Smallville after serving during World War II. He had previously been reported missing, and many people believed he would never come home. During his absence, Martha moved forward with her life and married Dan Fordman.

Jonathan’s return creates an emotional situation that is far more complicated than a traditional superhero conflict. His feelings for Martha have not disappeared. Martha also has unresolved emotions about the man she thought she had lost. Adding even more weight is Dan’s serious illness, which changes how each character views the future.

Writer John Byrne uses the story to deepen the history of the Kent family. Rather than relying on villains or large battles, he builds the issue around relationships, choices, regret, and family history. That approach helps explain the human environment that eventually shaped Clark Kent.

Kurt Schaffenberger provides the pencils, with Alfredo Alcala supplying the inks. Their artwork gives the flashback material a classic quality that fits Smallville’s earlier era. Byrne also provides the memorable cover. It shows Superman examining photographs and discovering a chapter of his mother’s life he never knew existed.

Collectors of Byrne era Superman material will find plenty to appreciate here. The series arrived during the major rebuilding of Superman continuity that followed Crisis on Infinite Earths. Stories from this period worked to give supporting characters richer backgrounds and stronger personal identities.

This issue also introduces several figures connected to the Kent family’s past, including Daniel Fordman and Sam Kent. Their presence expands Smallville beyond the familiar people Clark knows as an adult.

The World of Smallville #1 is not valuable because of a major Superman battle or a famous villain appearance. Its appeal comes from something more personal. It adds history to Jonathan and Martha Kent while showing that Superman’s adoptive parents had complicated lives of their own.

For Superman collectors, John Byrne fans, and readers interested in Smallville history, this is an enjoyable piece of late 1980s continuity. It also serves as the starting point for a short series devoted to the people who helped shape the Man of Steel.
