Description
Batman #139 launches “Mind Bomb,” a dark new chapter in Chip Zdarsky’s run on the series. Released in November 2023, the issue picks up after the destructive events of The Gotham War. Bruce Wayne has become increasingly isolated from the people who once stood beside him.
That isolation leaves Batman in a dangerous mental state. The influence of Zur continues to grow inside his mind. Bruce knows something is wrong, yet Gotham gives him little time to regain control.
The Joker has returned, and his latest crime feels intensely personal. Batman investigates a murder that connects directly to people from his past. The trail reaches back toward the teachers and mentors who helped shape Bruce into the man he became.
This makes the Joker’s attack more than another criminal scheme. He is targeting the foundation of Batman’s identity. Bruce is already struggling with anger, distrust, and the growing presence of Zur. The Joker understands exactly where to apply pressure.
Chip Zdarsky uses that conflict to push Batman into psychological territory. The issue explores what happens when Bruce can no longer fully trust his own judgment. His greatest enemy is waiting outside, while another threat is growing within him.
Jorge Jiménez provides the artwork for the main story, with colors by Tomeu Morey. Their Gotham feels shadowy, dangerous, and perfectly suited to Batman’s deteriorating state of mind. The action remains powerful, but the tension between Bruce and his own thoughts is equally important.
The issue also includes the opening chapter of “The Savage Garden of Gotham City.” Chip Zdarsky writes this backup story with artwork by Jorge Corona and colors by Ivan Plascencia. It focuses on Vandal Savage following the events of The Gotham War.
Savage discovers that the mysterious meteor connected to Gotham has changed his situation. His strength begins to fade when he leaves the city. That discovery gives the immortal villain a strong reason to remain in Gotham and pursue greater control there.
Collectors also get a major visual attraction with this Cover B edition. Gabriele Dell’Otto provides the cardstock variant artwork. His painted Batman emerges from almost complete darkness, with cold light defining the cowl, cape, and powerful figure.
The restrained color palette gives the cover a dramatic gallery quality. It also matches the psychological mood of the story inside. Dell’Otto has built a strong following among modern comic collectors, especially for his darker superhero portraits.
Batman #139 is not simply another Joker appearance. It begins a major confrontation between Batman, the Joker, and the dangerous personality growing within Bruce himself. The issue also continues important developments involving Vandal Savage and Gotham.
For collectors following Zdarsky’s Batman run, this chapter represents the beginning of an important story arc. The Gabriele Dell’Otto Cover B adds another reason to seek out this particular edition. It combines a memorable painted cover with the opening of one of the darker chapters from the Dawn of DC era.
