Description

Care Bears #7 is an unexpectedly desirable 1980s collectible with a cover that connects two very different corners of comic history. Released with a November 1986 cover date, this issue features the special 25th Anniversary border used across selected comics that month.

The pictured copy is the newsstand edition. Its barcode appears in the lower left corner of the cover. This detail has become especially important to collectors searching for different versions of the anniversary issues.

At the center of the cover is a huge pink Care Bear surrounded by familiar comic heroes. The border celebrates 25 years since the arrival of Fantastic Four #1 in 1961. That unusual combination gives Care Bears #7 a visual identity unlike almost anything else in the series.

Howie Post wrote and penciled the main story, “The Saddest Man in the World.” Roberta Edelman supplied the inks, while Isabell Bidwell handled the colors. Rick Parker provided the lettering.

The story introduces Sad Solly, a man who seems impossible to cheer up. Bedtime Bear, Birthday Bear, Good Luck Bear, and the other Care Bears try to overcome his overwhelming sadness.

Each attempt reflects the personality of the Bear making the effort. Bedtime Bear believes a peaceful rest might help Solly feel better. Instead, Solly begins explaining the many things that make him sad.

Bedtime Bear eventually becomes the one who falls asleep.

That playful reversal captures the style of the comic. The story deals with sadness in a way younger readers can understand. At the same time, Howie Post fills the adventure with jokes and expressive character reactions.

For collectors, however, the story is only part of the attraction.

The anniversary cover is what has pushed Care Bears #7 far beyond the usual value of many surrounding issues. Howie Post contributed the central cover artwork, while John Romita worked on the anniversary border.

The border is packed with recognizable heroes from the larger comic universe. Wolverine, Spider Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, members of the Fantastic Four, and several X Men can be spotted around the edges. Seeing those characters surrounding a giant Care Bear creates one of the most unusual anniversary covers of the period.

The newsstand format adds another level of collector interest. Copies sold through traditional retail channels were more likely to be handled, read, or discarded. Surviving examples have gained attention as collectors increasingly separate newsstand copies from their direct edition counterparts.

Care Bears #7 is therefore much more than a nostalgic children’s comic. It represents an unusual intersection of 1980s character merchandising, anniversary history, and superhero cover design.

For Care Bears collectors, anniversary cover collectors, and fans of unusual 1980s comics, this is a distinctive issue with genuine market interest.
