Description

Deathlok #5 brings the opening Cyber Folk storyline to a large scale conclusion packed with guest stars. Released with a November 1991 cover date, this issue centers on Michael Collins as Deathlok. It also pulls several major heroes into his battle against Mechadoom.

The story, “Deus Ex Machina,” is written by Dwayne McDuffie with pencils by Denys Cowan. Mike Manley provides the inks, Gregory Wright handles colors, and Ken Lopez supplies the lettering. That creative team gives this early Deathlok run much of its distinctive identity.

Deathlok has been investigating the disappearance of beings with mechanical or cybernetic bodies. The trail ultimately leads to Mechadoom and an army of Doombots. This final chapter turns the investigation into an outright rescue mission.

The guest list is one of the biggest attractions for collectors. Wolverine, Storm, Jubilee, and Forge represent the X Men. Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and the Thing bring the Fantastic Four into the conflict.

The supporting cast becomes even more unusual from there. Vision, Machine Man, Misty Knight, Ruby Thursday, Bushwacker, and Ultron all appear within the story. Their presence makes the issue feel much larger than a standard Deathlok adventure.

Mechadoom is especially important to the conclusion. The mechanical villain has been studying cybernetic and artificial beings, giving the storyline a natural connection to Deathlok’s own existence. Michael Collins is not simply wearing armor. His mind exists within a cybernetic body, so questions about humanity and machines are central to his character.

McDuffie understood that conflict well. His Deathlok stories often balanced superhero action with questions about identity, morality, technology, and personal responsibility. Those themes helped distinguish Michael Collins from earlier versions of Deathlok.

The collaboration between McDuffie and Cowan also carries historical interest. Both creators would soon become important figures behind Milestone Media. Seeing their work together on Deathlok gives collectors an earlier look at a creative partnership that would become highly significant during the 1990s.

The Denys Cowan and Mike Manley cover makes the crossover appeal immediately clear. Deathlok stands in the center while the Thing, Mister Fantastic, Storm, Wolverine, and other heroes surround him. The bold composition perfectly reflects the crowded superhero action waiting inside.

This issue is not generally considered a major key comic. Its appeal comes from the storyline conclusion, the creative team, and the unusually large supporting cast. It is especially attractive for Deathlok collectors, Dwayne McDuffie fans, and readers building affordable early 1990s runs.

With Wolverine, the X Men, Fantastic Four, Vision, Machine Man, Ultron, and more joining Deathlok, issue #5 delivers a memorable crossover chapter from the era. It also closes the first major storyline of the ongoing series with the kind of ambitious science fiction action that defined Michael Collins’ early adventures.
