Description

Gambit #1 is a major early solo milestone for Remy LeBeau and an essential comic from his 1990s rise in popularity. This particular copy is the Newsstand Edition, identified by the barcode used for newsstand distribution. It opens Gambit’s first solo limited series and dives directly into the mysterious history that helped make him such a compelling X Men character.

Released in 1993, the issue features a story titled “Tithing” by writer Howard Mackie. Lee Weeks provides the pencils and cover art, while Klaus Janson handles the interior inks. Steve Buccellato supplies the colors.

The story begins when Henri LeBeau arrives at the X Mansion looking for his stepbrother Remy. Trouble is developing in New Orleans between the Thieves Guild and the Assassins Guild. An ancient agreement is being threatened, and Gambit is needed back home.

Before Henri can explain everything, an assassin attacks him. Henri is mortally wounded, forcing Gambit into immediate action. Remy pursues the attacker and soon discovers a shocking connection to his own past.

The attacker is Julien Boudreaux, the brother of Gambit’s wife, Bella Donna. Remy had believed Julien was dead. The discovery immediately raises questions about what has really been happening in New Orleans.

The surprises continue when Gambit learns that Bella Donna is also alive. She had previously been believed dead following events involving Gambit and the X Men. Her survival gives Remy another powerful reason to return to the world he tried to leave behind.

Rogue becomes part of the journey as Gambit prepares to head for New Orleans. Their relationship adds another layer to the story because Gambit’s complicated romantic past is suddenly becoming very real again.

The issue is especially important because it begins Gambit’s first solo title. Until this point, readers primarily knew Remy through his adventures with the X Men. This limited series finally gave his own history room to develop.

Gambit #1 also contains the first appearance of Candra the Benefactress, an important figure connected with both New Orleans Guilds. Candra becomes a significant part of Gambit’s mythology and the strange traditions surrounding his past.

The issue also introduces Jean Luc LeBeau, Gambit’s adoptive father. Henri LeBeau makes his first appearance here as well, although his story takes a tragic turn almost immediately.

Lee Weeks gives the book a dramatic early 1990s visual style. His cover has become especially recognizable because of the enormous gold Gambit logo and Remy charging one of his playing cards above it.

This copy carries another collector angle because it is the Newsstand Edition rather than the direct market version. Newsstand copies were distributed through traditional retail outlets and can attract collectors who specifically hunt distribution variants.

For Gambit fans, this issue offers much more than an attractive cover. It launches his first solo series, expands his New Orleans history, introduces important supporting characters, and brings Bella Donna back into his life. It is a strong piece of Gambit history from one of the character’s most memorable eras.
