Description

Spawn #21 begins “The Hunt,” a four part storyline that pulls Al Simmons deeper into the criminal conflicts surrounding Tony Twist and Jason Wynn. Released in 1994, this issue comes from the early years of the original Spawn series and features Todd McFarlane handling both the story and pencils.

The issue opens with one of the more memorable visual changes from early Spawn history. Al’s badly damaged face needs attention, and Bobby helps stitch it together using a shoelace. The crude repair creates the distinctive stitched appearance that became associated with Spawn during this period.

Bobby also shares a painful story about losing his wife to brain cancer. His life fell apart after her death, leaving him among the homeless people living in the alleys. The conversation gives Al another reminder of the ordinary human suffering around him.

Spawn understands that feeling of loss better than most. He has returned from death only to discover that Wanda has built another life. His powers may be supernatural, but his emotional struggles remain deeply human.

Trouble soon finds him again. A man enters the alleys looking for Spawn and delivers a warning connected to Tony Twist. Al responds with the intimidation and brutality expected from the character during this era.

Elsewhere, Sam Burke and Twitch Williams continue searching for Spawn. The two detectives were becoming increasingly important supporting characters in the series. Their investigation keeps the human world connected to Al’s supernatural existence.

Jason Wynn is also tightening his grip on Terry Fitzgerald. Wynn receives information that clears Terry of accusations involving stolen military weapons. Rather than accept the findings, Wynn orders the evidence destroyed and continues watching Terry.

That decision shows just how dangerous Wynn can be. He is willing to manipulate information and threaten innocent people to protect his own interests.

Tony Twist is pursuing his own agenda at the same time. His men are searching for Spawn while information about Terry begins reaching the criminal organization. These separate threats gradually move toward the larger confrontation developed throughout “The Hunt.”

The issue also builds anticipation for the return of Overtkill. The massive cyborg had already proven himself to be one of Spawn’s most physically dangerous enemies. His connection to Tony Twist gives the developing storyline even more weight.

Todd McFarlane writes and pencils the issue, while Mark Pennington provides the inks. Steve Oliff and Olyoptics handle the colors. McFarlane also creates the striking cover featuring Spawn emerging from a mostly white background.

The minimal cover design makes the character the entire focus. Spawn’s red cape, glowing eyes, chains, and dark costume stand out sharply against the open space. It remains a classic example of McFarlane’s ability to create recognizable comic imagery.

Spawn #21 also has an unusual place in the series publishing history. It reached readers before issues #19 and #20 were released. Those delayed chapters eventually appeared later in 1994, creating an interesting curiosity for collectors following the original publication sequence.

This issue is not generally considered a major key appearance. Its appeal comes from early Spawn history, the beginning of “The Hunt,” and the memorable shoelace repair to Spawn’s face.

For Todd McFarlane collectors and fans building an early Spawn run, issue #21 is an affordable and visually memorable addition. It captures the dark crime, horror, and supernatural atmosphere that helped define the series during the 1990s.
