Description

Spawn #24 is a classic early issue from 1994 featuring story and artwork by Todd McFarlane. It concludes “The Hunt,” a four part storyline that places Terry Fitzgerald in serious danger. The issue also gives Spawn a chance to protect someone connected to his former life.

The story begins after the violent confrontation involving OvertKill. Detectives Sam Burke and Twitch Williams are dealing with the aftermath while Terry struggles to understand what has happened. Terry believes Wanda and Cyan are still in danger. He is desperate to reach his family before the people pursuing him can strike again.

The situation quickly becomes chaotic. Terry is wanted by several powerful groups, including the police, the CIA, and organized crime. Sam and Twitch attempt to control the scene, but Spawn has other plans.

When an approaching vehicle threatens Terry, Spawn steps directly into its path. His supernatural abilities allow him to absorb the impact. It is another dramatic reminder that Al Simmons is becoming increasingly comfortable using his powers.

Spawn then begins attacking Terry’s problems in a very different way.

Instead of relying entirely on violence, he uses information. Spawn possesses damaging material on several people who want Terry destroyed. Jason Wynn becomes one of his primary targets. Spawn makes it clear that Wynn’s secrets can become public if Terry continues to be pursued.

Tony Twist receives a similar warning. His criminal organization has been another major threat hanging over Terry and his family. Spawn confronts him and makes the consequences unmistakable.

Sam also receives information concerning corruption connected to Chief Banks. These actions gradually remove the pressure surrounding Terry. Spawn uses fear, secrets, and careful intimidation to accomplish what another physical battle could not.

By the end, Terry returns to Wanda. He cannot fully explain why his enemies suddenly seem willing to leave him alone. Readers understand that Spawn has been quietly protecting the family he once called his own.

That emotional connection gives Spawn #24 much of its appeal. Al cannot simply return to Wanda and resume his former life. Terry now occupies the place Al once held. Yet Spawn remains willing to risk himself to keep them safe.

Todd McFarlane handles the writing and primary artwork. Greg Capullo also contributed art assistance, while Tom Orzechowski provided lettering. Steve Oliff and Olyoptics contributed to the colors.

For collectors, Spawn #24 represents the early period when the series was still establishing its mythology and supporting cast. Sam, Twitch, Terry Fitzgerald, Wanda Blake, Jason Wynn, and Tony Twist all play meaningful roles.

The issue is not generally considered a major key appearance. Its importance comes from its place in the continuing early Spawn story. It also concludes The Hunt and strengthens the complicated relationship between Spawn and Terry.

Collectors who enjoy the original McFarlane era will find plenty to appreciate here. The issue combines supernatural power, organized crime, conspiracy, and the personal tragedy that defined early Spawn.
