Description

The Punisher #52 is a dark 1991 issue from the long running series starring Frank Castle. Writer Mike Baron delivers a grim crime story titled “Lupe,” with artwork by Paul Guinan and inks by Jimmy Palmiotti.

The cover immediately establishes the disturbing subject matter. Frank stands surrounded by infants beneath the dramatic “Maternity War” headline. Mike Harris provided the cover pencils, with Rodney Ramos handling the inks. It is an unusual Punisher image that stands apart from the gun battles commonly associated with the character.

Inside, Frank becomes involved in an investigation after the discovery of a murdered mother. The case leads him toward a criminal operation built around kidnapping infants and selling them for profit.

The central villain is Lupe Gutierrez. Her crimes quickly put her in Frank Castle’s sights. Punisher realizes that stopping the operation is about more than punishing those responsible. Another child could disappear unless he acts quickly.

That urgency gives the issue a different feeling from many Punisher stories of the era. Frank is still relentless, but the victims are especially vulnerable. The threat is not a costumed supervillain or a massive criminal army. It is a cruel operation that treats children as merchandise.

Mike Baron was one of the defining writers of this Punisher series. His run regularly placed Frank against drug dealers, organized crime figures, corrupt officials, and other grounded threats. Issue #52 fits comfortably within that approach.

Paul Guinan’s artwork keeps the story focused on the human side of the investigation. The violence remains important, but the danger surrounding the children gives each confrontation additional weight. Jimmy Palmiotti’s inks add strong shadows and definition throughout the issue.

The story also reflects the street level identity that made the Punisher especially popular during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Frank Castle was appearing across several titles during this period. His solo series often explored crimes that were darker and more realistic than typical superhero conflicts.

Lupe Gutierrez appears as the primary antagonist of this issue. Her role begins and ends within the story, making #52 a largely self contained chapter. Readers can enjoy it without needing an extensive knowledge of previous Punisher continuity.

For collectors, The Punisher #52 is not generally considered a major key issue. Its appeal comes from the Mike Baron era, its memorable subject matter, and its distinctive cover.

The book also represents the Copper Age period when Punisher had become one of the most visible antiheroes in comics. Frank Castle’s skull emblem was appearing across multiple monthly titles, guest appearances, and merchandise.

Collectors building a complete 1987 Punisher run will need #52 as part of that substantial series. It also makes an interesting pickup for fans of Mike Baron, Jimmy Palmiotti, and early 1990s street level comics.

The unusual Maternity War cover gives the issue added visual personality. Combined with its grim crime story, it is an overlooked chapter from one of Punisher’s most prolific eras.
