Description
The Uncanny X-Men #275 is a memorable oversized chapter from the Chris Claremont and Jim Lee era. Released with an April 1991 cover date, this anniversary issue delivers major events on two fronts. It combines cosmic X-Men action with a dramatic turning point for Magneto.
The story is titled “The Path Not Taken!” and opens with the Starjammers entering the conflict against Deathbird. The X-Men are already caught in the struggle surrounding the Shi’ar throne. They soon join forces with Lilandra against Deathbird and members of the Imperial Guard.
The battle brings Wolverine, Storm, Psylocke, Gambit, Jubilee, Forge, and other familiar characters into a large scale confrontation. Professor X also appears to have returned to the X-Men after a lengthy absence from the series. That apparent reunion becomes increasingly suspicious as the story progresses.
While the space conflict unfolds, another crisis is taking place in the Savage Land. Magneto has fallen into the hands of Zaladane. She intends to steal his magnetic abilities and claim even greater power for herself.
Rogue, Ka-Zar, and Nick Fury move against Zaladane and her forces. Their intervention gives Magneto the opportunity he needs to regain control. What follows is one of the most important moments in the issue.
Magneto kills Colonel Semyanov and then confronts Zaladane. Rogue urges him not to cross that line. Magneto rejects the path he had been trying to follow and kills Zaladane. Her death closes a major Savage Land storyline and marks a darker turn for Magneto.
That moment gives issue #275 lasting story significance. Magneto had spent years moving closer to Xavier’s philosophy. Here, he makes it clear that he no longer believes he can live by Xavier’s methods. Claremont uses the confrontation to show how far Magneto has traveled since becoming an ally of the X-Men.
The creative team is another major attraction. Chris Claremont wrote the story, while Jim Lee supplied the pencils. Scott Williams handled the primary inks, with additional art assistance from Karl Altstaetter. Lee and Williams also created the dramatic gatefold wraparound cover.
That cover is a major reason collectors still recognize this issue immediately. Wolverine, Psylocke, Gambit, Forge, Magneto, Lilandra, and other characters fill the expanded composition. The presentation feels perfectly suited to the spectacle of early 1990s X-Men comics.
The pictured copy is the direct market edition. It also displays the Eagle Awards winner emblem prominently on the front cover.
The Uncanny X-Men #275 is not simply another numbered issue from the run. It contains the death of Zaladane, a major Magneto decision, Shi’ar conflict, Starjammers action, and striking Jim Lee artwork. For collectors of Claremont era X-Men comics, Magneto stories, or Jim Lee artwork, it remains an appealing anniversary issue.
