Description
The Uncanny X-Men #285 is an important early 1990s issue with lasting significance for the Rasputin family. Released with a February 1992 cover date, this issue introduces Mikhail Rasputin. He is the older brother of Colossus and Magik. His arrival adds another complicated chapter to one of the most memorable mutant families.
The story follows the Gold Team after the events of the previous issue. Jean Grey, Colossus, Storm, Archangel, and Iceman have been pulled through a mysterious portal. They emerge inside a strange dimension filled with conflict and political tension. Sunfire also becomes involved as the heroes struggle to understand their surroundings.
Colossus and Jean Grey land among armed rebels. Instead of treating Colossus as an ordinary enemy, the group begins viewing him as someone connected to prophecy. This immediately places Peter Rasputin in an uncomfortable position. He has entered a world where people expect something from him that he does not yet understand.
Storm awakens elsewhere and encounters a mysterious hooded man. That stranger is eventually revealed as Mikhail Rasputin. Mikhail had long been believed dead, making his appearance a major shock for Colossus and the larger Rasputin story.
Archangel faces a disturbing situation of his own. While unconscious, his metal wings react without his control and kill several attackers. The incident raises unsettling questions about Warren Worthington and the lingering consequences of his transformation.
Iceman and Sunfire provide another thread as the scattered heroes attempt to regroup. Their arrival in the strange dimension adds more chaos to an already unstable situation.
Back on Earth, Bishop continues operating alongside Malcolm and Randall. The three men are hunting criminals who escaped from their future. Their storyline continues building Bishop’s role during this important period of X Men history.
Whilce Portacio handled the plot and pencils, with Jim Lee contributing to the plot. John Byrne supplied the script. Art Thibert and Al Milgrom provided finishes. Portacio’s artwork gives the issue the bold visual energy associated with the early 1990s.
The cover is especially memorable. Storm stands at the center while several characters appear caught in the strange dimensional conflict surrounding her. The dramatic composition captures the uncertainty of the story inside.
For collectors, the biggest attraction is Mikhail Rasputin’s first appearance. He would later become an important figure in stories involving Colossus, Magik, the Morlocks, and other mutant conflicts. That connection gives issue #285 more significance than a typical chapter from this period.
The pictured copy is the direct market edition. The lower corner features the Incredible Hulk 30th anniversary box instead of a newsstand barcode. Collectors building a Rasputin family collection, a Bishop era run, or a complete Uncanny X-Men set should find plenty to appreciate here.
