Description

The Uncanny X-Men #307 Pressman Mailaway Edition is a fascinating promotional variant from 1993. It combines a memorable Bloodties chapter with an unusual piece of X-Men collecting history.

The easiest way to recognize this edition is the metallic gold background. Standard copies use a much brighter yellow color behind Exodus. The gold treatment gives the John Romita Jr. cover a completely different appearance. It also makes this version immediately recognizable to knowledgeable variant collectors.

This edition was connected to the Pressman X-Men Alert Adventure Game promotion. The Pressman program produced four special X-Men comic variants. Those included The Uncanny X-Men #297, #303, #307, and X-Men #11. Some Pressman comics were obtained through promotional redemption associated with the game.

That unusual distribution history gives this copy much more collector interest than a standard #307. It was never simply another copy sitting beside the regular issue on comic store shelves.

The issue itself contains Bloodties Part Four, titled “Night and Fog.” Scott Lobdell wrote the story, with pencils by John Romita Jr. and inks by Dan Green.

Bloodties brings the X-Men and Avengers together during a violent crisis in Genosha. Fabian Cortez has kidnapped Luna, the daughter of Quicksilver and Crystal. That situation places her family at the center of an increasingly dangerous confrontation.

Quicksilver, Crystal, Jean Grey, and Scarlet Witch eventually encounter Cortez while he holds Luna hostage. Crystal desperately wants her daughter released. Cortez instead uses Luna as leverage against the heroes around him.

Then Exodus arrives.

His entrance changes the entire situation. Cortez understands just how dangerous Exodus has become. He tells Quicksilver and Crystal that saving Luna will require them to battle Exodus.

The conflict unfolds against the wider collapse taking place across Genosha. Members of both superhero teams become involved as violence spreads through the country. Personal loyalties, mutant politics, and family relationships all collide during the story.

Exodus dominates the cover for good reason. John Romita Jr. places him directly in the center of the composition. Other characters appear around the edges as Exodus rises above the chaos. The metallic gold background makes the image even more dramatic.

This chapter continues directly from Avengers West Coast #101. The Bloodties story then reaches its conclusion in Avengers #369. Collectors building the complete crossover therefore need this issue as the fourth chapter.

The Pressman edition adds another layer to that appeal. It belongs to a small family of promotional X-Men variants from the early 1990s. These books have developed a dedicated following among collectors who enjoy unusual distribution editions.

The gold background is especially important when identifying this copy. It should not be confused with the standard yellow cover. That visual difference is what separates the Pressman edition at a glance.

The combination of John Romita Jr. artwork, the Bloodties crossover, Exodus, and Pressman distribution makes this a distinctive 1990s X-Men collectible. It offers both story significance and variant history in the same issue.

For collectors who enjoy promotional comics, unusual X-Men editions, or complete Pressman sets, #307 is an excellent piece to track down.
