Description

X-Men #54 delivers one of the defining revelations of the Onslaught saga. Released in July 1996, this issue finally exposes the identity behind the mysterious villain. The answer changes the direction of the story and places the X Men in an almost impossible position.

Juggernaut arrives at the mansion carrying information locked deep inside his mind. He knows something important about Onslaught, but a mental block prevents him from accessing it. Jean Grey attempts to break through that barrier and uncover what Juggernaut has forgotten.

The situation becomes much more dangerous when Onslaught appears. Juggernaut is confronted by a force powerful enough to overwhelm even him. Onslaught then removes the Gem of Cyttorak from Juggernaut. The moment demonstrates just how dangerous this new enemy has become.

The most important revelation follows. Professor Charles Xavier is exposed as Onslaught.

That discovery gives this issue lasting significance within the larger 1990s storyline. The X Men have spent years trusting Xavier as their teacher and guiding influence. Now they must face an enemy connected directly to the man who brought them together.

The issue also continues the Beast storyline involving Dark Beast. The real Beast has been imprisoned while his sinister counterpart has secretly taken his place. Hank McCoy manages to escape, adding another major complication as the Onslaught crisis begins to erupt.

Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, Gambit, Bishop, Iceman, Cannonball, and Jean Grey all appear during this chapter. Their presence helps give the story the feeling of a major team event rather than an isolated confrontation.

Mark Waid wrote the issue, while Andy Kubert supplied the pencils. Dan Panosian provided the inks. Kubert also created the dramatic cover featuring the shadowed form of Onslaught surrounded by explosive energy.

The main story is titled “Inquiring Minds.” The cover promises “The Secret Revealed,” and the issue delivers on that message in dramatic fashion. It leads directly into the larger Onslaught event that spread across several major titles during 1996.

Collectors interested in the Onslaught saga should pay particular attention to X-Men #54. The revelation involving Xavier makes it one of the storyline’s most memorable chapters. It also captures the bold artwork and large scale storytelling associated with X Men comics during the mid 1990s.

The pictured copy is the Direct Edition. That designation is clearly printed beside the barcode on the front cover.

For collectors building an Onslaught set, an Andy Kubert collection, or a complete X-Men run, issue #54 has strong story appeal. It represents the moment when years of mystery finally give way to one shocking answer.
